What Is a School Governor?
A school governor is a volunteer who helps guide the school’s long‑term direction and ensures it provides a high‑quality education. Governors work with the headteacher to set the school’s vision, check how well the school is performing, and make sure money is spent wisely.
Governors don’t run the school day‑to‑day—they offer support and challenge as a “critical friend” to help the school continually improve.
Anyone over 18 with an interest in education can become a governor, and a wide range of backgrounds is welcomed.
There are different types of governors:
- A Local Authority Governor who is appointed by the Local Authority.
- A Co-opted Governor who is appointed by the members of The Governing Body.
- The Chair of Governors who is elected by the board of Governors.
- A Parent Governor who is invited to apply when there is a vacancy available.
