Welcome to Year 2

Our teachers are Miss McDermott in Ash class and Mr Turnbull in Elm class.
We are very lucky to have several Teaching Assistants who support the children with their learning.

Year 2 Teacher's Message

Welcome to the Year Two class page. We are Miss McDermott and Mr Turnbull and we are delighted to work together in this lovely year group supported by a fantastic team. In Year Two, we always strive to make learning fun and engaging for our pupils and we ensure that every child’s needs are met. As creative, outside-the-box thinkers, we are always ready for a challenge and for finding different ways to succeed. In his spare time, Mr Turnbull enjoys walking his dog and painting the wild, British countryside (not at the same time of course)! Miss McDermott is a keen runner and swimmer. Her background in textiles also takes her across the world finding inspiration to create bespoke fabric creations for family and friends. In Year Two, Mr Turnbull’s favourite topic to teach is ‘London’s Burning!’, whilst Miss McDermott loves exploring different cultures and countries through our topic ‘What a Wonderful World’.

Times Table Rockstars

Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help students master the times tables!  Children have the opportunity to practise multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12 through this engaging website. Teachers can set multiplication challenges suitable for your child and monitor the progress your child makes.

Here are some ideas of how you can support your child with our Year 2 curriculum:

  • Visit the library and read some books by our class authors; Floella Benjamin, Nick Butterworth and Janet and Allan Ahlberg.
  • Plant a seed, place it on a windowsill in your house and talk to your child about how you can help it grow.
  • Take a walk in your local area and talk to your child about what makes Rochdale special?
  • Can your child talk to an elderly relative about how their life was different when they grew up?
